Branshaw takes first in Omaha

Golf Betting Lines

08/02/2008 - Omaha, NE (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - David Branshaw fired his third straight seven- under 64 on Saturday to take the third-round lead of the Cox Classic, and in the process, match the 54-hole tournament record.

Branshaw's three-round total of 21-under 192 tied Chris Smith's 1997 tournament record at Champions Run. Smith parlayed the record into victory 11 years ago and Branshaw hopes to hoist his third trophy on the Nationwide Tour Sunday.

Vance Veazey posted a six-under 65 on Saturday and is alone in second place at 18-under 195.

Overnight-leader Ryan Hietala only managed a one-under 70 in the third round and is third at minus-17.

Branshaw did not get off to the kind of start one thinks of in a leader. He bogeyed the second hole, but that would be the only hiccup of the round for Branshaw.

He rattled off back-to-back birdies from the fourth, then birdied nine to make the turn at 16-under par for the championship.

Branshaw started his second nine with an eagle at the par-five 10th. He parred his next two and when Hietala bogeyed the par-three 12th, he and Branshaw were tied for the lead.

That tie did not last long. Branshaw rattled off back-to-back birdies from the 13th and Hietala double-bogeyed 15 to fall four back. Veazey bogeyed 14 as well to fall three back.

Veazey got to within two thanks to a birdie at 17, but both Branshaw and Hietala birdied 17 and parred to give Branshaw his three-shot lead with one round to go.

Two-time winner this year Colt Knost (67) and Garth Mulroy (70) share fourth place at 14-under 199. Last week's winner in Ohio, Bill Lunde (68) is alone in sixth at minus-13.

Gary Christian (65), Greg Owen (66), Alex Prugh (71) and first-round leader D.A. Points (70) are tied for seventh place at 12-under-par 201.

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship.  Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92.  After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points.  Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1.  Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years.  With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed.  UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern.  Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier.  OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak.  Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.  It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta.  But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
