08/05/2007 - Foxborough, MA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - D.C. United's Luciano Emilio scored twice in a 3-0 win over New England on Sunday to pull into a first-place tie for the scoring lead in Major League Soccer.
Emilio has 12 goals this season - 10 in his last nine games - to match Kansas City's Eddie Johnson for the most in the league. Emilio scored in the 31st and 76th minutes, helping D.C. to a crucial win over Eastern Conference leader New England.
Joshua Gros also scored - his first goal of the season - as D.C. (8-6-3) moved into third place and within six points of the Revolution with two games in hand. It was just the fourth loss this year for New England (9-4-6), which had its five-game unbeaten streak snapped.
D.C. United had the first good scoring chance in the 19th minute when defender Marc Burch played a long ball into the middle of the box. Emilio ran under the pass and directed a hard header on goal, but Revs goalie Matt Reis was able to push it over the crossbar.
Three minutes later, Reis' lackadaisical play allowed United to take the early lead. Clyde Simms took a shot from just outside the box on the right side at the end of a long possession for D.C., and the All-Star goalie made a routine save by knocking the ball down in front of him.
As Reis was on the ground, he was slow to secure the ball and Gros raced in to touch the ball off his fingertips and into the right side of the net. Reis put his hands up to dispute the play and most of the players weren't sure if the goal counted, but he never had control before Gros tapped it away.
Gros, who had three goals last year, hadn't scored in 15 appearances this year - all starts.
New England had its first scoring chance in the 29th minute off a corner kick from Steve Ralston, the league's all-time assists leader. The Revs' Pat Noonan headed the ball from the right side at the far post, but sent it wide.
United extended their lead two minutes later when forward Guy-Roland Kepne and Emilio combined on a goal. Kpene, making just his fourth start of the season with Christian Gomez, Jaime Moreno and Fred out of the starting lineup, put a perfect pass between two defenders into the box.
Emilio shook off New England defender James Riley at the top of the box and ran onto the ball inside the penalty area. He calmly tucked the ball inside the right post past a sprawling Reis to move within one goal of Johnson for the MLS lead. Burch picked up the second assist on the goal.
New England, the highest scoring team in MLS, had a couple more chances off of corners by Ralston in the final five minutes of the half but couldn't convert.
The first corner set up a header by Taylor Twellman, who leads the team with eight goals, but it bounced off the right post. The second corner kick bounced across box and Noonan got a little touch at the left post but D.C. goalie Troy Perkins had the goal covered and made the save.
Both teams made changes to start the second half, with D.C. taking Kpene off for Moreno and New England removing Andy Dorman for rookie Adam Cristman. But neither move made much of a difference.
Moreno wasn't completely fit and was removed in the 75th minute. He remained tied with Real Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis for the all-time MLS lead with 108 goals.
Emilio pulled into a tie with Johnson for the league scoring lead a minute later when he buried his 12th goal of the season on a breakaway.
United midfielder Ben Olsen set up Emilio's second goal with a nice pass down field. Emilio ran onto the ball and was in one-on-one with Reis when he placed the ball low to finish.
Reis allowed three goals or more for the fourth time this season. He finished with six saves.
Perkins finished with two saves for D.C. to post just his third clean sheet of the year. It was just the third time this year New England has been shut out.
United and the Revolution tied 1-1 in their only previous meeting this season on May 3. The clubs meet for the final time in the regular season on Sept. 9 at D.C.

Super Bowl XLIII is now set, the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers will meet each other on February 1st in Tampa's Raymond James Stadium to battle it out for the coveted Lombardi Trophy. The game kicks off at 6:00pm ET on NBC with announcers Al Michaels and John Madden covering the on-field action. Super Bowl XLIII betting odds at online bookmaker MySportsbook.com have the Steelers listed as an early -6.5 against the spread favorite.Super Bowl XLIII Betting Odds
Pittsburgh earned their passage to the big game by beating their division rival, the Baltimore Ravens, 23-14 in yesterday's AFC Championship Game. The Steelers jumped on Baltimore early, building a 13-0 first half lead, and never let up on their way to a fairly easy win. Although the Ravens did close to within two points in the fourth quarter, it never appeared as if they had enough offense to pull off the upset.
The Steelers dominating defense held Baltimore to a total of 198 yards while allowing them to convert just three third downs in 13 attempts. Pittsburgh also forced quarterback Joe Flacco into three interceptions, one of which safety Troy Polamalu returned fourty yards for a touchdown.
The Cardinals, by far the playoff team with the longest odds to reach Super Bowl XLIII, did so yesterday with a 32-25 upset of the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship. Arizona charged out of the gates and built a 24-6 halftime lead that had the Eagles venerable defense reeling. Quarterback Kurt Warner and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald did most of the damage, connecting on three first half touchdowns.
Arizona, however, could not sustain their momentum and the Eagles took a 25-24 with 10:45 left to play in the fourth. The Cardinals, with the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance hanging in the balance, mounted a fourteen play, 72 yard touchdown drive that consumed 7:52 off the clock. Warner hit running back Tim Hightower on a short screen for the go-ahead, game clinching score that will forever live in Cardinal infamy.
MySportsbook.com's Super Bowl XLIII Betting Odds:
Pittsburgh Steelers -6.5 (-110), Over 46.5 (-110), -260 (Money line)
Arizona Cardinals +6.5 (-110), Under 46.5 (-110), +220 (Money line)
Matt Foust won both of his conference championship plays yesterday and he is ready to serve up plenty of Super Bowl action. Each individual play costs $15.00, however, MySportsbook.com recommends purchasing Matt's NFL Playoff Package which includes all of Matt's Super Bowl props and picks from just $45.00.

Brandon Roy Favorite to Win 2007 NBA Rookie of the Year
Portland TrailBlazer’s guard, Brandon Roy, is MySportsbook.com’s overwhelming favorite to win the NBA Rookie of the Year odds.
Despite missing 20 games due to an injury earlier this season, Roy has definitely put up the best numbers of his 1st year peers. In 32 games, Roy is averaging 15.3 PPG, 4.2 boards and 3.5 assists in over 33 minutes of play per game. While most rookies breakdown as the season progresses (see Morrison), Roy is only getting stronger as his playing time and scoring average has increased each month.
With 30 or so games left in the regular season, Roy isn’t a lock for the award by any means. Other rookies are putting together some pretty impressive campaigns and a few could give Roy a run for the award with increased playing time. Heading the list is first pick, Andrea Bargnani of the Toronto Raptors. Even though he has started only two games all season, Bargnani is averaging 10.3 PPPG while shooting 35% from deep.
Randy Foye of the Minnesota Timberwolves could be set to give Roy the best competition NBA Rookie of the Year betting lines. With the benching of Mike James, Foye looks like he could be the starter in the T-Wolves backcourt for the rest of the season. So far, Foye has averaged 9 PPG and 2.4 assists in just under 21 minutes per game. With his new role of starter, Foye’s numbers will definitely increase. In his first game as the new starting guard this past Sunday, Foye had 10 points; five rebounds and 8 assists. More importantly, he logged 34 minutes of playing time; his third highest run of the season.
Adam Morrison, of the Charlotte Bobcats, was the favorite early on in the season after averaging 15+ PPG through the first month of the season. Ever since his torrid start, Morrison’s point production has declined each month. This really isn’t surprising, considering at 6’8” he only weighs 205 lbs. Obviously he will need to hit the weights big time during the off-season in order to keep from breaking down in the future.
